Medicine in India - Jenna Pyper

Throughout my entire University career, I have worked towards getting into medical school. I took my Medical School entrance exams, took more organic chemistry than I care to say, and narrowed down my university choices. However, it wasn't until my third year that I realised I didn't even know if I LIKED medicine. So I decided to get some clinical experience and as I was already going on an exchange to Australia, I decided to do this overseas.

To this day, I can not tell you why I chose to do my medical project in India. I had never had a strong desire to go or learned much about its culture, politics or people. In hindsight, I can also tell you that choosing this experience was the best choice I have ever made.

My placement at the hospital was both challenging and insightful. The doctor I worked under was fantastic. He always took the time to explain things we didn't understand and allowed us to be a part of as much as possible. The whole experience was an absolute eye-opener and definitely reaffirmed my desire to get into medicine. The experience of being in the operating room and taking part in so many procedures was unforgettable. My favourite memory was definitely the emergency C-section we performed. It was both amazing and humbling to be a part of and allowed me to appreciate the role I will play as a health care professional.

For others who are looking for something that is both challenging and rewarding, a Projects Abroad medical placement is a great choice! I already can't wait to plan my next adventure!
